Godrej Industries' new brand identity

Godrej Industries has released a statement about its new identity and logo resemblance, stating that it has concluded that there is no ethical or legal impediment to the use of the GI identifier.

The Godrej Industries Group created this rebranding as a result of the formation of two distinct business groups in 2024.

The statement revealed, "The geometric GI identifier is our corporate group identifier, always seen alongside the Godrej signature logo or the company name. It is designed and intended to be used for specific professional stakeholder audiences, like investors, media and talent. For the GI identifier, we went through an extensive process that generated a wide range of options. This GI identifier was chosen as we wanted something as elemental as possible, reduced to its simplest geometric form, so that the GI identifier would sit cleanly alongside the Godrej signature logo without competing with it."

Soon after the corporate identity was rolled out, questions were raised on the likeness of the logo as it resembled that of Guerrilla, an agency in Australia, as well as some other businesses outside India.

Responding to this, the group stated, "After completion of the design process, as part of our intellectual property diligence, we discovered numerous other marks using simple geometric compositions like the GI identifier. A half circle, rectangle and circle combination appears across dozens of identities in multiple countries in varying sectors ranging from software to service agencies to medical devices. Resemblance in the category of geometric logos is not just common, it is structural and is found across many brands and logos."

It further added, "While choosing to represent the GI identifier in this simple form reduces its uniqueness, we nevertheless believe it is appropriate for our brand identity system encompassing the Godrej signature logo, the GI Identifier, a custom typeface, a bespoke sonic identity, and other elements. Having confirmed both the originality of the work and that our brand identity system is clearly distinct from any other brand, we concluded that there is no ethical or legal impediment to the use of the GI identifier."

The logo was created by Disco, Godrej Industries' in-house design agency.
