Flipkart's Freedom Sale campaign

Ahead of Independence Day, Flipkart has found a cheeky way to tap into one of the most recognisable phrases associated with the occasion - ‘British Raj’ (a phrase used to represent the British era in India) by giving it a distinctly contemporary, and humorous, twist.

Conceptualised by 22feet, part of Omnicom Advertising India, the campaign plays on the double meaning of ‘British Raj’.

Rather than referring to the colonial era, Flipkart turns its attention to people named Raj living in Britain, with the brand ‘looting’ their Instagram posts by dropping Freedom Sale discount codes in the comments.

The idea is brought to life through a film with one-liners and visual gags built around India's historical era, before revealing the campaign’s central twist: this is a ‘British Raj’, not the ‘British Raj’.

The activation that went live on 7 August, extends beyond the film across social media and OOH with the campaign using QR codes to direct audiences to the film and invite them to participate in the hunt for discount codes as the Freedom Sale gets underway.

What we think about it: The campaign idea benefits from the cheeky wordplay and cultural familiarity of the term by giving a sale-led campaign a distinctive hook without becoming overly patriotic or sentimental and sidestepping the usual advertising playbook used on the occasion. The narrative though simple manages to lend itself naturally to the brand’s social stunt, where the joke extends beyond the film into an actual consumer interaction, while keeping the sale at the centre of the idea.
