Rajat Sharma, chairman and editor in chief, India TV, filed a lawsuit seeking a permanent injunction and INR 100 crore in damages, alleging that several Indian National Congress (INC) leaders misrepresented his conduct during a televised debate.
Due to this, on 3 July, the Delhi High Court ordered social media platform X to comply with a single judge's order to remove these defamatory posts.
The directive originates from allegations that Congress leaders Ragini Nayak, Jairam Ramesh, and Pawan Khera misrepresented Sharma’s actions during a debate on India TV and disseminated edited footage on social media.
According to media reports, despite X's claims of being a neutral platform, the court highlighted global trends of non-compliance by intermediaries and stressed the importance of adhering to judicial orders, especially in matters involving personal reputation. The court clarified that the order is an interim measure, with further hearings scheduled.
This move underscores the court’s commitment to addressing issues related to individual reputations with urgency and seriousness.
