Starbucks India has announced a collaboration with fashion designer Anamika Khanna. This follows the recent opening of its 100th store opening in Mumbai. The first store was launched in Mumbai in 2012.

Part of the collaboration with Khanna is creating limited edition tote bags designed by the fashion designer. This was announced through an event in Mumbai on 23 January.

Explaining the rationale behind this, Adrit Mishra, chief operating officer, Starbucks, said, “The key insight (behind the creation of the limited edition tote bags) was how we can honour the different neighbourhoods and different communities that we are proud of. The brainstorming started and it was a creative brilliance where we thought of coming up with 16 different designs of the tote bag, which will represent every community of Bombay (Mumbai).”

Mishra also discussed how the coffee culture of the city has grown from the usual cold coffee, hot chocolate and cappuccino to americano, which is now among the top two drinks consumed by people in Mumbai.

“Starbucks has played a key role in whipping the coffee culture in Mumbai," he said, before discussing some of the innovations they have made.

"We also started an all-women store, making Mumbai the first market globally for Starbucks to start a store run completely by women. We now have five of those in the city. We also started a store called ‘Signing Store’ where special partners with disabilities run the store and currently two of them are operating in Mumbai,” he noted.

In February 2024, Starbucks also collaborated with designer Manish Malhotra for a limited edition drinkware.
