Maruti Suzuki has rolled out a teaser for its first electric vehicle - e Vitara. The e Vitara will be launched under its premium brand Nexa.
The car is scheduled to be revealed later this month at the Auto Expo. In a chat with Campaign India in 2021, Shashank Srivastava, executive director, Maruti Suzuki, had revealed that the company would be launching its first EV before 2025 after the country met the infrastructure requirements. In the interview he also stated concerns around the charging infrastructure while pointing out about 'range anxiety for consumers'.
To address these concerns, the company has rolled out 'e for me: A new era of electric eco-solutions', through one more teaser which looks to address those needs Srivastava pointed towards in the interview with the author of this story.
In 2024, Tata Motors' Punch (EV and ICE) was the highest-selling car in India. This was for the first time since 1985, that Maruti Suzuki wasn't the manufacturer of the car with the most sales in the country. The Punch came in Petrol, CNG and EV options, while Maruti operated only Petrol engines with a hybrid technology.
EVs contributed to 6% of the total cars sold in India in 2024.
However, with Maruti Suzuki now entering the EV space along with a focus in the 'electric eco-solutions', and players like Mahindra & Mahindra, Hyundai Motor India, and Tata Motors among others strengthening its portfolio, its contribution to total car sales in the country could be reaching double digits, a percentage Maruti Suzuki believed would be achieved in 2030.
