The Advertising Standards Council of India (ASCI) has released its 'Annual Complaints Report'.
ASCI scrutinised 8,229 advertisements during the year. 98% of the overall ads processed required some modification. 49% of the ads were not contested and promptly withdrawn or modified. 85% of the 8,229 ads scrutinised appeared on digital medium.
39% of the ads processed were in violation of the law as certain categories of products are either not allowed to be advertised or the categories are illegal in India.
This includes ads in violation of the Drugs & Magic Remedies Act, 1954, as well as offshore betting ads.
19% of the ads processed belonged to the healthcare sector making it the most violative sector for the year. This was followed by illegal offshore betting ads making it the second most violative sector.
Personal care was third with 13% of the ads. 55% of ads from the sector were influencer disclosure violations. 76% of those ads were contested and edited immediately.
Education was fourth on the list with 962 ads (12%) scrutinised by ASCI. Edutech, a separate category, had 141 (2%) violative ads.
101 of the total ads scrutinised featured celebrities. 48% were upheld. 32% fell under the 'not-contested' category.
