Google India has rolled out a campaign featuring veteran cricketers Sourav Ganguly, Virender Sehwag, Anil Kumble, Eoin Morgan, Shane Watson, and Mohammad Kaif in a humorous cricket-themed search challenge. The campaign aims to promote the search engine’s online ‘Googlies’ contest, with the added promise of winning signed merchandise and a chance to meet one’s favourite cricketers.
Conceptualised by Bare Bones Collective, the campaign consists of an ad film.
The ad film - a fun twist on search - showcases Ganguly or ‘Gangoogly’ as someone who’s obsessed with challenging his cricket mates with quirky cricket-themed quizzes from Google, anytime and anywhere. At the receiving end of his ‘googlies’ are not only his hapless former teammates Sehwag, Kaif and Kumble, but also Watson and Ponting - all of whom are flummoxed by this new-found obsession of Dada, leading to several humorous exchanges and encounters. Finally at their wit’s end, they turn to the source of their distress – Google for help.
What we think about it: Its fun watching the veteran cricketers - most of whom were known for their serious, sober images - come together for a quirky campaign, pulling out their acting chops. The cherry on top is seeing Dada fully embrace the role of the obsessive ‘Gangoogly’ with childlike delight. And yes, it also helps raise the curiosity quotient about the search engine brand's 'Googlies'!
